The Promise

- The Promise showcases Silvina Ocampo at her most feminist, idiosyncratic and subversive.

- Best known for her short stories, The Promise is Ocampo’s only stand-alone novella to be published in English, in the U.S., offering readers a new glimpse into the prolific imagination of one of the most brilliant and unique writers in Latin American literature.

- This is one of two books by Silvina Ocampo—her first book and her last book—being simultaneously published by City Lights, each of them translated into English for the first time.

We will promote The Promise and The Forgotten Journey actively together, bookends of a remarkable career. Books will be packaged to resemble each other.

We will seek younger, contemporary writers to comment on the importance of Ocampo.

- Silvina Ocampo is key feminist voice of 20th century, one of the few women to be included in the modern Latin American canon, a modernist whose vision and talents will appeal to contemporary readers of feminist, fantastic and literary fiction.

- Recent interest in Ocampo’s work situates The Promise, which was written over the course of twenty-five years and almost up to the time of the author’s death, as an indelible bookend to a tremendous career.

- The Promise has been translated from the Spanish by two award winning translators, experts in the tradition of Argentine fantastic literature, of which Ocampo was a crucial, if under-translated, figure.
